Chapter 16 Questions / Vocab & adobe

  1. 1.Having to do what the civilians told him to do made him really mad.
  2. They thought it wasn’t necessary and they laughed every time they came in the hall to talk to them.
  3. They got into arguments and started to fight with each other.
  4. They put pots on top of the cooks head and push them around until they do what the boys want them to do.
  5. I have never bullied anyone so I wouldn’t know how it is.
  6. They didn’t do anything to him so he just got more furious about it.
  7. Well I have craved Pancakes at one time and I told my mom to make some and she did.
  8. They fight and argue until they cant anymore from exhaustion.
  9. I think the staff members keep coming back because they want what’s good for the boys.
  10. Poppy was one of the staff and they wanted dry mattresses so they beat him for them.
  11. I don’t think I would even want to walk around without a knife or a gun but I would still work there.
  12. He kept getting migraines because he would not want to take the medical help and he kept getting worst.
  13. In the classroom they also fought each other and stabbed each other with pencils.
  14. They would first burn the supplies they kept getting from the staff but then decided to sell them.
  15. After breakfast they went to the city by taking the buss.
  16. They were scouting for food supplies and many more things that would be helpful for them.
  17. At one village Alhaji decided to play Rambo and succeeded doing so.
  18. They kept watching the Rambo movies to inspire them.
  19. I think they are all now savages and are druggies with no drugs and I think that is really sad.
  20. No they didn’t let anyone live in the villages.
  21. Alhaji received the name little Rambo because of his tactics.
  22. Ishmael was called little green snake because he was really good at hiding in the bushes without being seen.
  23. The city was something like that they had never seen and it amazed them all.
  24. The informal school was boring for them so they just attended to receive their fieldtrips.
  25. When he tried to go to sleep without medication he would have night mares and would wake up punching.
  26. Well between May and October it is known as the rainy season.
  27. They got onto the bus and jumped off when they had to get off.
  28. At night they would all put their mattresses outside and sit their until morning.
  29. They couldn’t sleep because they weren’t used to it and they only slept if they had drugs.
  30. I think it’s a little method they used as a psychology situation.

Chapter 15 Questions / Vocab & adobe

1.1.They have been fighting for over two years and it seemed as if their child hoods passed without them knowing.
2.2.Some men with t-shirts that read unicef.
3.3.He considered the base as his home and the rest of the soldiers his family.
4.4.He had been fighting for about two and was now fifteen years old.
5.5.He wanted to hear Jumah’s stories and no because he was so used to them he actually wanted to hear them again.
6.6.They talked about the old times and how they were before they joined the army.
7.7.They are taking them to a little camp for teenagers who need a fresh start, and I would feel bad and I would choose to stay and help them fight.
8.8.He was really angry and he kept thinking of high jacking the truck and killing all the MP’s.
9.9.They all wanted to fight each other because they were all brain washed to kill.
10.10.The men in the clean clothes were city soldiers and they could tell because of the uniforms they were wearing.
11.11.He pushed him and told him to not touch him or he would kill him.
12.12.Ishmael is probably really confused and he is really mad at the point that his life keeps changing.
13.13.He saw the black tar road and a lot of traffic which he has never seen before.
14.14.They got into an argument and almost all started fighting with each other.
15.15.The boy had an RUF tattoo and they all calmed down and started talking about here they were stationed.
16.16.The thought that they had beaten the rebels up made them really jolly.
17.17.They transported them to another little camp site which used to be a juvenile facility.
18.18.He felt the same as the one before as if he were taken from his home.
19.19.He grabbed the grenade out of his pocket and put his finger on the little trigger thing.
20.20.Because they had killed his family and burned up his village.
21.21.The refugee camp was not helping the boys out that much because they still hated the rebels but it was not going to help them out that fast.
22.22.They were beat up and jacked for their guns.
23.23.Two were killed from the armies side and four from the rebels side.

Chapter 14 Questions / Vocab & adobe


  1. Well Ishmael changed by using drugs he became what he detested in the past.
  2. He became addicted to cocaine, brown brown, marijuana, and the white capsules because that’s what helped him forget about everything and made him feel good.
  3. He got really shaky and took off all his clothes and was just really numb.
  4. The only difference between Ishmael and the rebels is that the rebels are the bad guys.
  5. They watch war movies and use the drugs.
  6. Killing really doesn't matter anymore it is natural to him now.
  7. They would watch movies by using a generator or sometimes a car battery.
  8. He was similar to Rambo because they were both in war.
  9. They changed because of all the killing and drugs they had done because now all they wanted was to be the best killer.
  10. Well one time when I was completely changed to a different person was when I was kicked out of my house and had to survive on my own all I had to care for was just me and it was hard.
  11. When they raided other villages they would get food, ammunition, civilians, gasoline, and sometimes rebels.
  12. To capture rebels they would have gunfights against them until they were able to be captured.
  13. When they got civilians they would take them to their village and make them all they confiscated from the rebels
  14. Ishmael was feeling special when he was assigned as jr. lieutenant.
  15. Well, I do think he is a little brain washed but the drugs are what keeps him the way he is that is why the lieutenant gives them drugs all the time.
  16. They practice killing prisoners by lining them up and slicing their throats with a big knife and see who kills their slave first.
  17. Each night they celebrated by using drugs and watching Rambo movies.
  18. The contest was won by Ishmael and he won by being assigned to Jr. Lieutenant.
  19. Ishmael does not sleep anymore because of the drugs he uses.
  20. I think Ishmael is now exactly like he never waned to be.

Chapter 13 Questions / Vocab & adobe

1.1.The corporal tells them to worship their lord because they needed to get ready to go to war.
2.2.The boys made two teams and played to see which team captures the other first.
3.3.The bag of tablets were kind of energy boosters that help you stay awake.
4.4.Ishmael had tears in his eyes because he did not want to die.
5.5.Ishmael did not feel anything but he kept having flashes in his mind about people dying.
6.6.I don’t think I would freeze up because if someone was the cause of my life being trashed up liked that I would have no problem killing them.

Chapter 12 Questions Part 2

1.I actually do think Ishmael is safe with the soldiers because they can actually defend them selves from the rebels.
2.The mood in the village is kind of a little worried because the rebels seem to have been winning every battle the good guys have fought against them.
3.The villages mood darkened when the soldiers said there might be a chance the village is going lose the war to the rebels.
4.In the evenings the soldiers would clean their guns and sometimes fire some rounds into the air for practice.
5.Well the reason why Ishmael would busy himself all day was because then he would start thinking of really bad things and about his family and by staying busy all day he wouldn’t think of anything but work.
6.The soccer games made him miss his family and village more and more every time he would watch all the others play.
7.While others played games in the village he would go around the back and sit there thinking of absolutely nothing well at least trying to.
8.The reason he was getting the migraines was because he kept thinking of all the dead people over and over again until his head started to hurt bad.
9.Well lieutenant Jabati was a nice educated man as it seems for the reason that he was reading Shakespeare.
10.Ishmael liked reading Shakespeare because he loved the stories that were written and he liked to act out the plays.
11.When the story says only few of the soldiers returned it was because many would die in battle and not be able to make it back home.
12.When the soldiers brought back prisoners they would line them up and shoot them in the head.
13.The bodies that were shown to the villagers were a boy and a man who lived in the village who decided to leave and were killed by the rebels.
14.The rebels did not care how they killed you who they killed and why they killed you they will kill you if they see you.
15.The woman and children had to help in the kitchen and the boys and men had to get training with a weapon to be ready to go to war.
16.Ishmael's tent companions were his friends that had been with him all along his journey.
17.Ishmael’s tapes were burnt along with his pants.
18.The soldiers who were coming back from the front line came back terrified and really scared to go back.
19.That the rebels are the reason why they ended up living this way and the rebels are the ones who killed their family.
20.He started thinking about how he kill every soldier he could kill and give them no mercy.

2.2.The setting is they are in a safe camp helping the good guys.
3.3.They lived actually good because the village was full of soldiers who made them go inside their tents at certain times to avoid any of them dying and they helped cook for the soldiers as well as making ammunition for them.
4.4.Well he did it because he was kind of traumatized and he just always wanted to be alone.

7.7.Ishmael does join the fight against the rebels, and I would of too because for the reason that they are the reason why my life is all messed up.

9.9.Well it wasn’t that hard for him its just he is kind of nervous because he knows that he cannot back down any more.

Chapter 11 Questions / Vocab & adobe

1.They had a little burial ceremony in the mans house in the living room.
2.He was a notorious single man in his town who new Ishmaels family.

4.Ishmael was really excited and eager to get to the village.

7.He began screaming because he saw more than twenty people all lined up face down with blood pouring from their bullet wounds.

Chapter 10 Questions / Vocab & adobe

1.1.The boys felt welcomed when asked to go hunting and feast with the villagers.
2.2.When he would play tricks on his brother his grandma would call him a spider.
3.3.He missed how he would mess around with his brother and his whole family was always smiling.
4.4.They didn’t want to hear the story of the spider because they had already heard it many times.
5.5.That tells me that the community is very close together and that everyone treats each other like family.
6.6.The dog was the one who took the remaining of the meat.
7.7.I think Saidu had the worst since his sisters and mother were raped in front of him and his father.
8.8.I do think that the people passing by were just ghost because my beliefs state that crows represent the dead.
9.9.I think the dogs saw death that is why they were crying and what a coincidence that one of the boys died.

12.12.The unsettling thing about Ishmael’s journey is that he has good luck evading the rebels but he keeps getting into worse situations.

16.16.When Saidu says that he means he knows that death is calling him and its just a matter of time before he is gone.

18.18.Well one of my fondest memories with my family was when I actually lived with all of them at the same exact time.
19.19.Musa’s family was separated while a raid in Mattru Jong and he had been running ever since.
20.20.Alhaji was at river fetching water when the rebels attacked and as he went back to his home he found an empty home.
21.21.Kanei’s story was he had escaped the rebels along with his parents by jumping inside of a boat when the rebels shot it down he swam to the shore and had escaped the rebels while everyone else in the boat was killed.
22.22.Jumah and Moriba’s story was that as being neighbors rebels attacked and they ran to the forest to look for their parents but found no one.
23.23.Saidu’s family was unable to leave town because they were also surprised by the rebels and he listened in on his sisters being raped while his dad shouted to stop.
24.24.Saidu’s sisters were all raped while his mother and father watched.
25.25.To me the crow falling form the sky means that death is up ahead.

Chapter 9 Questions / Vocab & adobe

1.1.While the boys get closer to the ocean they can hear the booming of the waves crashing down in a ferocious way.
2.2.Well the ocean helps him relax and enjoy life clearing his mind from all the bad things going on, I also love going to the beach to calm my nerves and become into a meditating mode.
3.3.The clustered huts were completely deserted and mortars lay in the sand, rice spilling out of them; jerry cans leaked water, and fires were left unattended under cooking huts.
4.4.Men or warriors from the deserted huts came out and chased the boys but couldn’t catch them until finally they did and took their shoes from them.
5.5.Well they attached the young boys because they too had heard the rumor that young boys were the ones killing helping the rebels, I was mistaken one time by a police helicopter and the cop car came to me but they had caught the guy a few blocks down so they just let me go and excused them selves.
6.6.Taking the shoes from the boys was a really bad punishment because that made them get blisters and mess up the bottom of their feet with the burning hot sand.
7.7.The group of boys cried in silence because they had no energy to cry and they also didn’t want to be heard by any one.
8.8.The strange man helped the boys out he gave them shelter and fed them and even healed their feet for them.
9.9.Musa is a boy that was with Ishmael who had a round face, he was short and bulky, with tiny round ears that matched his face, his eyes were big and looked as if they wanted to leave his face.
1.10.Kanei was also one of the boys in the group but he had a long and calm face, he was skinny and had short, really dark hair that he took great care of every morning.

Slide 2011.Alhaji was also part of the group and he had really long arms and talked with elaborate gestures.
2.12.Jumah another one of the group used his head for gestures than his arms in which he kept behind him whenever he talked and nodded his head to the conversation.
3.13.The last two of the group were Saidu and Moriba in which were always together but apart from the group Saidu walked breathing heavily with large ears that stood up like a deer’s, while Moriba mostly played with his hands, examining the lines on his palm and rubbing his fingers as he whispered to himself.
4.14.I think if I compared with one of these boys I would compare with Saidu because he was a really quiet person and he seems really calm.
5.15.When Ishmael found the host he described him as a really nice man with the whitest teeth, never wore a shirt he was part of the village and the hut they stayed in was his fishing hut in which was only about half a mile away from the village, I have never met any one who was that nice but I can picture it in my head very clearly on someone being really nice to me.
6.16.When the kids were being chased they did get caught and tied in ropes and put in front of the tribe chief.
7.17.Ishmael turned and stopped running and told the guy chasing him to just tie him up and the guy did.
8.18.The chief of the village kept calling the boys devils and no one liked it.
9.19.Again like last time the cassettes of his music saved him and got him out of being killed.
10.20.Well I remember one time when I was skating in a parking lot some car was speeding and didn’t care for anyone’s safety by driving raucously hit me on the side of my foot and I fell hard and started cussing at the driver he then got out and said I'm sorry gave me a hundred dollar bill and I got up and skated away because it didn’t hurt that bad.

Chapter 8 Questions / Vocab & adobe


1.Well I think he felt as if someone was following him because he was traumatized and so hungry his mind was playing tricks on him, I think I can’t relate because that has never happened to me.
2.Death is what is always on his mind since every where he goes he sees it and is scared its going to happen to him.
3.His sleeping situation was not good at all because he had to sleep on tree branches which are one of the most uncomfortable things you can sleep on.
4.Well he ate what most of the birds were eating which looked like a lemon shape, with a mixture of yellow and red colors, and it seemed to smell like a mango/ orange, and the inside was a crusty, watery, fruity part with a really tiny seed.
5.The medicine his grandpa made was to enhance his brain and help him learn and take in new information he made it by writing a special Arabic prayer on a slate with ink that was made of another medicine, he then washed it off with water and that water was put into a bottle and drunken.
6.The hardest part of being in the forest was having to watch out for any rebels or any dangerous animals like baboons.
7.Well a time I wished I could stop thinking was when I got locked up I tried and tried but could not stop thinking of all my problems and all my debts to society but it just wouldn’t work.
8.His life in the forest wasn’t that bad because he had where to take baths he had some kind of plant to use as soap he had a lot of ripe fruit around to eat so it was all good for him.
9.His spirit was turned alive when the wild boars came running through the forest and came back to chase him half a mile away.
10.He was able to tell what tribe they were from because of the marks on their cheeks and their features.
11.This quote means that they have seen so much ugly and bad things they kind of went crazy. They were forced to grow up because they had to take care of themselves and survive.
12.Men were trying to kill them with machetes because there were rumors about “seven boys”, they thought they were killing people or causing trouble, but the men let them go when they realized they were just boys running away from the war.
13.The images kept making him walk faster, his body also twitched with fear, he also became dizzy. He was able to see the leaves swaying but he couldn't feel anything.
14.To keep himself occupied he finds things to do.
15.Ishamael does seem scared to be lost in the jungle, but when he try's to think of a way to leave he is to scared to think because he is probably safer in the forest anyways.
16.It is a risk to eat the strange fruit because he does not know if they are poisonous or not, but he figured if the birds eat them he can to.
17.The memories of his family made Ishamael sad. It makes him sad because he misses them and because they are not around anymore and it brings a lot of sad thoughts.
18.He used a particular type of grass. When he squeezed a lot of grass together foam would come out and it would leave his body clean and fresh.
19.Ishamael is very lonely. When he is lonely he starts thinking to much , he didn’t like thinking to much because every thought was a sad one. He would think about where his life was going and where his family and friends were.
20.Some dangers that are beginning to scare him are coming in contact with the wild animals.
21.I think when Ishamael thinks about his family it just makes him sadder, but I think it probably makes him stronger also because he was a bigger strive to survive.
22.He was in the forest for a little over a month.
23.He ran into 6 boys that he went to school with. There names were Alhaji, Saidu, Kanei, Jumah, and Moriba and Musa.
24.He was able to tell what tribe they were from because of the marks on their cheeks and their features.
25.One of the boys asked him a question a Ishamael did not reply, so the boy Kanei tapped him on the shoulder and told him everything will turn out ok later.

Chapter 7 Questions / Vocab & adobe


1.It happened unexpectedly one night, the rebels just walked into the village from out of nowhere.
2.Imam is the person who leads the prayer. The rebels captured him and bound his hands and feet with wire, and tied him to a iron pole n set him on fire.
3.The boys got separated because, Junior was in the verandah room where all five slept and his brother was outside sitting on the steps.
4.Well not really because it does not relate to me.
5.His main source of diet was oranges that he pick up in every village he slept in.
6.His trying to get to Bonthe. Because, its one of the safest place at that time.
7.The man and his family treated him like if he didn’t want them around them and didn’t trust them. Because, they couldn’t even trust a 12 year old boy anymore.

9.The rebels tortured him and cut his arms and legs and tied him down to a iron pole and set him into fire but he died before he was completely burn.

12.The village was all burn down and parts of Imam were found in the iron pole and there was no signs to tell what the village name was.
13.Ishmael feels afraid of getting caught by the rebels.

16.Ishmael probably feels bad by not being trusted by the family when his a good boy that just los his whole family.

Chapter 6 Questions / Vocab & adobe


1.Well one advantage of being in a group of six boys is that you have more lookouts. A disadvantage of being in a group that big is it’s a bigger chance of getting caught.
2.The children were feared because they were used to kill their own families.
3.Well the group of boys avoided confrontation with people in villages by staying out of the way of them.
4.The consequence of war was that everyone was against outsiders.
5.The boys were saved by a kid that somehow knew all of their names.
6.The chief wanted the group to be drowned because he thought they were lying to him.
7.Ishmael escaped death again by getting lucky and having some kid actually know his name, and his relationship with his brother is very strong in love wise.
8.Ishmael’s internal conflict that involves his brother J.R. is that he is scared of losing him like the rest of his family.
9.The season is around Spring because he explains it with lots of leaves on the floor and kind of wet.
10.They poured wine in the soil as part of a ceremony to thank the ancestors and gods for providing fertile soil, healthy rice, and a successful farming year.
11.He saw that since there were a lot of kids altogether he knew that they would end up getting caught.
12.The backbreaking work of clearing a bush was so hard his palms flesh were peeling, they were swollen, and blistered.
13. The reason why Ishmael and his brother were misfits in their community was because they fought with every kid, they would beat kids who they thought talked bad about them.
14.Yes, I can relate to growing up as a misfit because I was a weird kid who liked to see kids hurt.
15.The reason why Ishmael got into a lot of fights was because he beat kids up who would look at him as if their parents were talking bad about him and his brother.
16.The significance of the ending of this chapter was a sad one because he and his brother along with his friends were all separated.
