Chapter 21 Questions / Vocab. & adobe


1.The thought that he was walking in a moving sidewalk in the Amsterdam airport.
2.He had never seen so many white people in one place like the ones in New York.
3.His school back at his home had only a small building, made of mud bricks and a tin roof not like ours is so big and full of technology.
4.The kids would help their teacher with his crops to make money for themselves and for the school.
5.No one sat close to him and Mohamed because somehow they all new that they were child soldiers and they thought that they could snap and kill someone.
6.I myself would not be nervous to be friends with them I would think that its kind of cool that they had gotten to receive that experience.

Predicament- an unpleasantly difficult, perplexing, or dangerous situation
Apprentice- a person who works for another in order to learn a trade.

Chapter 20 Questions / Vocab. & adobe

  1. His vision of New York City before he got there was from his rap music.
  2. I think New York is all full of graffiti and is all bum mish looking.
  3. He did not know what winter was because in Sierra Leone it never gets that cold, and he had heard of winter from Shakespeare.
  4. When he had first felt NYC’s weather he thought it was the coldest thing had ever felt.
  5. A time where I felt culture shock was never because I have always experienced all of my cultures physically.
  6. They are staying in the YMCA hotel by 47th street.
  7. There are children from all over the world and different countries.
  8. He was baffled by the food because he had never seen food like that before and also it was hard to adjust because he was so used to his old life.
  9. He learned that all the other children there were there because they all had gone through something similar in their past.
  10. Laura Simms is an instructor that told stories to everyone, she was a short lady with long black hair and bright eyes.
  11. He did not accept the jacket because he said it was a girls jacket, and I would not either because I rather be cold than look like a fruity kid.
  12. Well when he and Madoka visited Time Square he stated seeing big screens with commercials on them some with flashing words, some with underwear models, and other types of commercials.
  13. The conference was so the people there could know about them and everyone could learn about how their countries were and he felt as if he were very nervous.
  14. Ishmael talks about how he had to become a soldier to be able to support his family but turns out that his family ended up dying, and I liked the sentence where he states “ it was not easy being a soldier, but we had to do it”, because it is very true any where you go.
  15. Yes, I do agree with his speech because he told the truth and everyone was astonished about it.
  16. One experience I had had a while ago and I still have to work on it till this day was when I got into trouble with the law for the last time I still have to pay a large amount of money in order to be set free.
  17. I think music and dancing is a big part of his life because its what he has done ever since all of the problems started.
  18. He left New York City on November 15, 1996 in which his birth date was only six days away.
  19. He was going back where his uncle lived after he had had his fun and terrific experience in New York City.
  20. I think he is going to be chosen to go back to New York City and live there for the rest of his life.
  21. I think his life is going to be different back in Sierra Leone because he has a really good experience that no one else around there has.
  22. I think he will return to the group he was from but maybe not all of the others will be chosen to go back.
  23. I have experience growth from something negative when I was 15 my mom and I had a big fight and I thought I was never going to talk with her again but it actually brought us together more.

  • Overwhelmed- to overcome completely in mind or feeling.

Chapter 19 Questions / Vocab. & adobe


  1. When the people said Ishmael had to be reinstated into the normal society they meant he had to be put back into having a normal life in a normal home.
  2. I think the two weeks felt really long because he did nothing and it seems as if on day takes forever to end.
  3. A time when I felt as if time took a long time was when I was in juvenile hall I was there for one month and if felt as a year because I did nothing all day long.
  4. I think he survived the war because he had a better purpose in life.
  5. Well really if that happened I would actually want my little brother to be one of the only ones to survive because he has not yet experienced anything really.
  6. He packed a pair of sneakers, four t-shirts, three shorts, toothpaste, a toothbrush, a bottle of Vaseline lotion, a walkman and some cassettes, two long-sleeved shirts, and two pairs of pants and a tie.
  7. Well Mambu had to return back to the front lines because his family didn’t want to take him probably because they thought he wasn’t rehabilitated yet.
  8. No I don’t think I can relate to Mambu but I know someone who had that happen to him in juvenile hall where his family never came to pick him up so he had to stay longer.
  9. I remember when I lived in Utah for a few months I had to leave and I left all my friends behind and I have not seen them for a few years and I don’t think I will ever see them again.
  10. He felt as if he was in love with her and he wanted to let her know but he couldn’t.
  11. When his uncle picked him up he treated him as if he were a special guest.
  12. Ishmael was welcomed into the family with a big feast with chicken.
  13. I think he is happy to finally live normal but it’s a little hard because he hasn’t done that for a very long time.
  14. Allie was the one who took him out to the club and it seems as if he had lots of fun.
  15. Everyone was dressed very clean and proper and he was used to dressing with clothes that he received so that means he didn’t have much choice.
  16. The girls were dancing with him by rubbing on his and then slow dancing with him.
  17. The memory of guns firing and people screaming was the flash back he was getting.
  18. Well upline is a word used to name the outskirts of the country that don’t show up on the map.
  19. The interviews were to see who was going to be chosen to go to the U.S. and represent the war children.
  20. They are changing the way Ishmael is by making him dress more professional and be a better speaker than he was.
  21. Dr. Tamba is the main person who is preparing them to go to America.
  22. Ishmael did get his visa after having a long conversation with the lady that distributes them.
  23. Ishmael is off to New York City now and who knows how long he is going to be there for.

Chapter 18 Questions / Vocab & adobe

  1. Ishmael believes he has nothing left to live for because he seems to have no family left.
  2. Esther treats Ishmael as if he were his brother and she gives him presents and talks about optimistic things only to him.
  3. Abigail is a girl who he dated in secondary school and she seemed to be a very pretty girl who talked to Ishmael all the time just like Esther.
  4. The visitors were important people because some were the sponsors or helpers of the rehab center that he was in and they all dressed nice with suits.
  5. I do think the visitors made him nervous because they looked as if they were capable of doing whatever to them.
  6. Esther wanted Ishmael to sing for the talent show but he decided something else.
  7. Mr. Kamara told Ishmael that everyone was impressed with his talent.
  8. During gatherings Ishmael would talk about stuff like saying it was possible for young boys to be rehabilitated just as he was.
  9. When Ishmael saw his friend Mohamed he was happier than he had been in a long time because he remembered when he had last seen his friend and he thought he was never going to see him ever again.
  10. Tommy is his father’s brother but it seemed as if he wasn’t because Tommy looked way too light from the skin.
  11. Repatriated means when a soldier is reunited with his old community.
  12. As soon as Tommy walks into the room to meet Ishmael he looks as if he wanted to start crying and he did he hugged Ishmael and convinced him that he was his uncle.
  13. A time I reunited with someone I hadn’t seen in a long time was when I saw my dad after 4 years because he was in prison it felt as if I was complete in family wise.
  14. Tommy had promised to visit Ishmael every weekend and he did.
  15. Ishmael thought he would feel guilty if he told his friends about his uncle because they still had no family found for them.
  16. Ishmael loved the walks with his uncle because he would always receive a little present and they would always talk about his father and these talks were important because it was helping him feel better.
  17. I would probably not care about them and probably had given up on that word already.
  18. His uncle lives in a place called New England Ville which was a hilly area in the western part of Freetown.
  19. His aunt is a really nice lady with a glowing face, short with very dark skin, dark cheekbones, and bright eyes.
  20. I think his aunt is very excited for Ishmael to go and stay with them because she likes having fosterage kids that are real family.
  21. Ishmael learned that his grandfather had many wives and his father had brothers he didn’t even know of or ever talked about.
  22. One thing I learned about my family is that are ancestors are from Japan, France, and Italy.

  • Reuniting- to unite again, as after separation.
  • Repatriated- to send back to one's own country.

Chapter 17 Questions / Vocab & adobe

  1. 1.The nurse is a really nice girl and she seems to have a thing for Ishmael.
  2. Ishmael’s friends teased him about hanging out with the nurse all the time and I have been in that situation when I was in sixth grade I had a crush on this girl and everyone knew but her until they told her and we finally were boyfriend and girlfriend.
  3. The nurse let Ishmael know that if they were going to be friends that he was going to be like her brother.
  4. He would say stuff like that because he feels the war and everything that happened to him he hated his life and everyone in it.
  5. I have never been in a situation that is like how Ishmael is in.
  6. The nurse gave Ishmael a walkman with a RUN DMC cassette.
  7. Ishmael reacts with lots of surprise in because he was shocked to see the gift he had received and he hadn’t seen that in a lng time.
  8. He shot hem down and shot each one face to face because they had shot him.
  9. Esther was so sad she felt like crying and wanted to keep hugging Ishmael but he wouldn’t let her.
  10. Esther didn’t want Ishmael to take the walkman with him because she was worried someone would steal it form him.
  11. The thing that stood out the most from Ishmael’s story was his age.
  12. I think his lieutenant was really nice but in a way he was taking advantage by brainwashing them into going to war.
  13. Ishmael has been injured many times by bullets just missing him or by explosions.
  14. He started having flashbacks about killing and blood everywhere.
  15. The doctors gave him a prescription for all of his scars and nurse Esther had to rub it on him.
  16. The worst thing I have ever endured was when I got into a fight with my brother and he pushed me into a second story buildings railing and the railing broke and I fell with it.
  17. He got up and was shocked at the situation and demanded to go back to the rehab center.
  18. He fired an entire round of shots at the bush were the shots had came from.
  19. He felt so bad as if he were traumatized and I have had flashbacks of when my father was nice and actually acted like my father.
  20. Esther went to visit Ishmael on her day off because she wanted to take him to pick up his medication and to eat dinner at her house.

  22. I think it’s a passion for him because it lets him forget about everything and he concentrates on one thing only.
  23. No I have never written a song but I think its like an another way of art for people to try and express themselves in a poetic way
  24. Ishmael liked the stories because he thought about his ancestors and how everything was all messed up.
  25. My favorite Bob Marley song is weed with bone thugs and harmony because it is hip-hop slash reggae roots and that is my favorite kind of music.
  26. Ishmael started to believe the phrase every little thing is going to be alright because the way Esther said it.
  27. I think my girlfriend is my savior because of her I started looking at life a different way and I started wanting to succeed in school.
  28. Ishmael liked talking to Esther because she was good at speaking and convincing him that life was going to be alright.
